Vane Geometry and Downforce per Canard

Each canard vane is 120mm long and angled at approximately 15° from the bumper surface plane, generating a longitudinal vortex that energizes airflow along the front quarter panel. At 100 km/h the contribution per canard is approximately 2–3 kg of downforce and a measurable reduction in front quarter-panel lift. The polypropylene construction has the same Shore D 60 hardness specification as the TYPE-S lip, providing durability against minor contact.

How Canards Differ from a Front Lip

Canards are more aerodynamically active than a front lip. They generate measurable downforce contribution at speeds above 60 mph and their effect compounds as speed increases. On a lightweight platform like the GR86, this is perceptible in high-speed directional stability and how confidently the front end responds in fast sweeping corners. The TYPE-S canards are part of the full aero package but work effectively as a standalone upgrade with or without the lip.

Standalone or Paired with the TYPE-S Lip

Polypropylene construction makes these flexible enough to absorb minor contact without cracking. They ship unpainted for body-color or contrast application. The mounting hardware attaches to the bumper without requiring modification to the factory surface.

The FT Breakdown

Canards are one of those aero pieces that divides builds visually. They signal a specific intent. On the GR86 they read correctly because the car's proportions and platform history support them. HKS designed these for aerodynamic function first; the aggressive appearance is a consequence of the shape requirements, not the other way around. Two to three kilograms of downforce per canard at 200 km/h is meaningful on a 1,270 kg car. That number scales with speed squared, so at 160 km/h it is still contributing 1–2 kg per side. The vortex generation effect also continues to benefit the side of the car aerodynamically even at lower speeds where the direct downforce number is small.
