The HKS Hi-Power SPEC-L Exhaust System for the 2013-2021 Scion FR-S, Subaru BRZ, and Toyota 86 is the first generation of HKS's SPEC-L muffler design for the FA20 platform. The predecessor to the SPEC-L2. The SPEC-L delivers HKS's Hi-Power exhaust character with the SPEC-L specific internal tuning that balances the aggressiveness of the Hi-Power line with improved mid-range response. 50.8mm Pipe, 7.6 kg, 92 dB(A) at WOT

The BT001 SPEC-L uses 50.8mm (2 inch) main pipe and a single 115mm (4.5 inch) tip, identical pipe diameter to the SPEC-L2 but with the original SPEC-L internal geometry. Sound level is approximately 92 dB(A) at 1m at WOT, 1 dB lower than the SPEC-L2, which reflects the slightly more muffled character of the SPEC-L versus the L2's revised expansion chamber. System weight is approximately 7.6 kg. For FA20 applications where the SPEC-L2 is not available or the slightly softer sound is preferred, the BT001 is a valid choice within the same pipe and tip specification.

SPEC-L Internal Geometry vs the SPEC-L2

The SPEC-L internal tuning improves on the standard Hi-Power design with revised internal geometry that gives the exhaust more mid-range character. The difference is audible under load from 3,000-6,000 RPM where the FA20 does most of its work on the street. The SPEC-L2 refines this further but the SPEC-L remains a strong exhaust for the platform.

The FT Breakdown

The SPEC-L is the predecessor to the SPEC-L2 and the difference between them is incremental rather than fundamental. For FA20 owners building out their exhaust setup, either is a strong choice. The SPEC-L is typically available at a value price and represents good HKS engineering for the platform. The 0.6 kg lighter weight than the OEM exhaust and the consistent 92 dB(A) character make the SPEC-L a reasonable choice when the SPEC-L2 is not available or the slightly quieter tuning is preferred. HKS does not release products that are significantly inferior to their successors — the SPEC-L is a genuinely good exhaust that happens to have been followed by an incrementally better one.
