The TYPE-S side skirts extend the rocker panel profile by approximately 30mm downward, reducing the gap between the car's lower body and the road surface. This gap reduction is the primary aerodynamic mechanism, a smaller gap means less turbulent air can spill under the floor from the sides, which reduces underbody pressure loss and improves the effectiveness of any rear diffuser or undertray. HKS's contribution figure for the side skirts in isolation is approximately 3–5 kg of total downforce at 200 km/h, with the more significant benefit being the 8–10 kg of underbody lift reduction they provide.

Side skirts are one of the more aerodynamically significant aero pieces relative to their visual subtlety. They work continuously at any speed where airflow under the car is meaningful. Their effect is not as speed-dependent as canards or a wing.
