Hipermax R Coilovers for the 2020-2023 GR Supra

The HKS Hipermax R Coilovers for the 2020-2023 Toyota GR Supra represent HKS's performance-focused coilover offering for the A90 platform. Above the HIPERMAX S in spring rate and damper firmness, developed with track use in mind while remaining usable on the street. The Hipermax R uses higher spring rates than the HIPERMAX S and a damper tune that is calibrated for the aggressive inputs of performance driving rather than the mixed-use approach of the street coilover. If you regularly take the Supra to track days and want the suspension to respond accordingly, the Hipermax R is the correct choice.

Specs & Highlights

  • Full coilover system, front and rear
  • Higher spring rates than HIPERMAX S
  • Performance-oriented damper valving
  • Height adjustable
  • Designed for track use with street capability
  • Fitment: 2020-2023 Toyota GR Supra

10/8 kgf/mm Rates, 46mm Piston, 16 Clicks

The AT003 Hipermax R runs 10 kgf/mm (560 lbf/in) front and 8 kgf/mm (448 lbf/in) rear spring rates, notably stiffer than the HIPERMAX S at 8/7 kgf/mm. Ride height adjustment is -15mm to -45mm at the front and -10mm to -40mm at the rear. Damper adjustment provides 16 clicks of combined compression/rebound tuning. The inverted front strut design uses a 46mm piston diameter versus the HIPERMAX S's 36mm, providing better damping control at the higher spring rates the R specification demands.

Why the R Needs the Higher Spring Rates

The spring rate difference between the HIPERMAX S and Hipermax R is significant. The R's rates are chosen for the loads generated in performance driving. Fast direction changes, hard braking into corners, high lateral G in sustained corners. The stiffer setup means more body control and more consistent suspension geometry under those conditions. The tradeoff is a firmer ride on imperfect road surfaces, which is the expected and appropriate outcome for a track-focused coilover.

Ride Quality Tradeoff and Alignment Requirement

Damper adjustability on the Hipermax R allows you to modulate the firmness within the R's performance range. The adjustment range does not overlap with the HIPERMAX S's comfort end. This is a performance coilover with adjustment within that space, not a dual-purpose unit. Four-wheel alignment after installation is required.

The FT Breakdown

The Hipermax R is for Supra owners who have committed to performance driving and want their suspension to reflect that. The HIPERMAX S is the better choice for mixed street and occasional track use. If the Supra sees regular track days or time trials, the Hipermax R is the one HKS would put on their own car. The 46mm piston body in the Hipermax R is not overkill for 10 kgf/mm springs — it is the appropriate diameter to generate the damping force those spring rates require to keep the car controlled rather than bouncy. An undersized damper on stiff springs produces exactly the harsh, unpredictable ride that gives performance coilovers a bad reputation. HKS specs the damper body to the spring rate, which is the only correct way to build a coilover.
