The HKS GT2 Supercharger System Pro for the 2013-2021 Scion FR-S, Subaru BRZ, and Toyota 86 is one of the most significant bolt-on power upgrades available for the FA20 platform. The GT2 system uses a Roots-type twin-screw supercharger that delivers boost immediately from low RPM. Unlike a turbocharger, the supercharger is mechanically driven and there is no spool lag. The FA20 with the GT2 system installed maintains the naturally aspirated engine's responsiveness while adding forced induction power output.

Lysholm Rotor, 7-8 psi, 228-235 whp on Proper Tune

The HKS GT2 supercharger uses a Lysholm-type twin-screw rotor pair with a 2.0-liter displacement rating, driven at approximately 2.4× engine speed via the belt drive system. At 7,000 rpm engine speed, rotor speed is approximately 16,800 rpm. The system produces approximately 7–8 psi (0.48–0.55 bar) boost at the standard pulley ratio, with peak power outputs documented at approximately 228–235 whp on a properly tuned stock-displacement FA20. The front-mount air-to-air intercooler is rated for the standard boost level with approximately 45–55°C charge temperature reduction across the core.

Supercharger vs Turbo: Why Throttle Response Wins

The supercharger versus turbocharger debate for the FA20 platform consistently favors the supercharger in street applications because of throttle response. A turbo FA20 makes its power in the midrange and upper RPM range where boost has built. The GT2 supercharger makes boost at idle and delivers it linearly throughout the rev range. For a car as rev-happy and driver-focused as the FR-S and BRZ, the supercharger's power delivery suits the platform better than a turbocharger in most driving situations.

Budget for the Tune as Part of the Project

The GT2 system includes the supercharger unit, intercooler, intake piping, and all required hardware for installation. It does not include the ECU calibration. A professional tune using the HKS Velocity Advanced Computer or a compatible ECU management solution is required. Budget for both when planning the project.

The FT Breakdown

The HKS GT2 Supercharger System Pro is what this platform was designed to accommodate. The FA20's conservative compression ratio, the engine bay packaging, and the platform's balance all point toward forced induction as the natural development path. HKS has the most developed supercharger system for this application and the GT2 Pro is the result of years of refinement. The 228–235 whp on a properly tuned GT2 installation represents roughly an 18–20% power increase over a stock FA20's approximately 197 whp — enough to transform the character of the car. The FA20's naturally aspirated responsiveness remains intact because the supercharger delivers boost at every RPM, including the low-RPM street range where a turbo of equivalent peak power would still be spooling.
